Gold turns edges higher while Dow remains lower on the week amid tapering fears

Aktualisiert  Dec 13, 2013 11:30:00 AM

Precious metals have turned higher on the session and the week, helped, in part, by the struggling equity markets. Investors’ appetite for risk has decreased somewhat this week after the US House of Representatives approved a two-year budget which has all but averted the possibility of another government shutdown in January. As a result, tapering expectations have been brought forward by a good few months. All of a sudden many now believe the Fed would  [...] Weiter lesen...

AUD/USD hovering above a multi-year trend

Aktualisiert  Dec 12, 2013 7:30:00 AM

The Aussie is testing a multi-year bullish trendline around 0.9000/50. It’s weighed down by weaker commodity prices and after the Reserve Bank of Australia’s aggressive rate cuts from late 2011 through to mid-2013. Although rates have been kept at 2.5% since then, the RBA has repeatedly voiced concerns about the still-high Australian dollar. The AUD also been weighed down by prolonged AUD/NZD selling due to the on-going interest rate differential expectations between the RBA and  [...] Weiter lesen...

FTSE breaks bullish trend amid tapering concerns

Aktualisiert  Dec 12, 2013 6:55:00 AM

The FTSE’s recovery from last week did not last long. Investor sentiment turned sour after the US budget deal was reached earlier this week which raised expectations of a December or January tapering from the US Federal Reserve. The relatively small $85 billion agreement is expected to pass Congress without too much drama, thereby removing the possibility of a government shutdown in January. However they will still have to raise the debt ceiling again at  [...] Weiter lesen...

US Nov. Employment report impresses, but not game-changing enough see Dec. QE taper

Aktualisiert  Dec 6, 2013 10:10:00 AM

Today’s US November employment report came in better than consensus, surprising the market with a headline print of +203K versus expectations of +185K – Meanwhile, the prior monthly revision were mixed, with October declining by 4K and September increasing by 12K (net revision +8K). Altogether, this brings the 6-month NFP average to 179.5K jobs. As a result, this increased market expectations that the Fed could start to scale back their asset purchases in December, however  [...] Weiter lesen...

US 10-year yield rises ahead of tomorrow’s US employment report…2.90% is key

Aktualisiert  Dec 5, 2013 6:15:00 PM

Several weeks ago we highlighted that “while many will argue this break higher is decidedly bullish for treasury yields, we remain cautious. Technically, the US 10-year yield is approaching 61.8% retracement of the Sept-Oct. decline around 2.80%, furthermore this has been coincided by daily RSI testing the key 60/65 level, which is typically where it may find resistance if seller are to reemerge.” Sure enough this effectively played out as forecasted, with the 10-year yield  [...] Weiter lesen...

USDCHF attempts to rally off 0.9025/30

Aktualisiert  Dec 4, 2013 11:15:00 AM

A few weeks ago we highlighted USDCHF’s failure into the key 0.9240/55 zone, which saw the convergence of the 100-day sma, 21-week sma, daily 144 & 169 ema’s and 38.2% retracement of the May-October decline, but then we were watching to see if prior resistance could turn into support around 0.9130/50. Ultimately, this level failed and USDCHF continued to decline, however the descent has been orderly as it has remained within a channel formation.  [...] Weiter lesen...

XAUUSD remains in a downward spiral

Aktualisiert  Nov 25, 2013 11:12:11 PM

A slight pullback in the US dollar and low prices has helped to lift gold off its lowest level since July. Earlier in the week the yellow metal took a hit after a deal was struck between Iran and world powers to limit nuclear proliferation, this sent gold to its lowest level since July, making it cheap enough to attract some buyers. A slew of economic data out the US this week may help  [...] Weiter lesen...

USDJPY hits its highest level in two months

Aktualisiert  Nov 20, 2013 11:44:47 PM

USDJPY has tested a resistance zone around 100.55/60 as the Nikkei pushed higher and the Fed signalled that tapering may happen sooner than expected. The Fed didn’t provide any direct clues on when it’s considering tapering its asset purchases but it is considering cutting the interest it pays to banks on their reserves which could be part of a plan to offset an eventual slowing of asset purchases. This suggests the Fed is gearing up  [...] Weiter lesen...

Summary of October FOMC meeting minutes & potential timing of first rate hike

Aktualisiert  Nov 20, 2013 4:25:00 PM

The USD has strengthened since the release of the Fed meeting minutes. •  Yellen: Monetary policy likely to remain highly accommodative long after thresholds reached
•  Evans: Fed probably will purchase $1.5T in assets from Jan. 2013 until QE is wound down
•  Bernanke: Interest rates to remain low until “well after” 6.5% unemployment threshold reached As a result, while the door for Tapering QE in December is still open, we believe it will not occur until early  [...] Weiter lesen...

Fedspeak, US data & FOMC minutes to dominate price action over next 24-hours

Aktualisiert  Nov 19, 2013 6:15:00 PM

In a NY session otherwise devoid of major market moving information we saw two Fed doves, Yellen and Evans, made some headlines. •  Yellen: Economic thresholds are not triggers for rate hikes
•  Yellen: Monetary policy likely to remain highly accommodative long after thresholds reached
•  Yellen: 6.5% unemployment rate & 2.5% inflation are not long-run goals
•  Yellen: Fed policy makers see a 5.2-5.8% unemployment rate over the long run
•  Yellen: Fed following balanced approach of maximum  [...] Weiter lesen...
