London Session: ADP and ISM data misses deal mild blow to USD

Updated Apr 3, 2013 10:00:00 AM

The problem with this US recovery and stock market rally is that no sooner are you lulled into a false sense of security that the economic recovery will continue then a data point reminds you that the US recovery is still fragile. Take today’s ADP report, it missed expectations of a healthy 200k and came in at 158k for March. This is still a good run-of-the-mill number, but it’s not the magic 200k that everyone  [...] Continue Reading

NY Session: USD broadly higher after stronger labor data

Updated Mar 6, 2013 4:05:00 PM

The USD is higher across the board after stronger US economic data. US treasury yields and equities are advancing as well. It is too early to say that the USD is no longer responding inversely to risk sentiment, however the improving fundamentals are playing an increasing role in USD strength of late. Indeed, correlations tend to break down when markets rally and are generally much stronger in times of risk aversion. The JPY is the  [...] Continue Reading

NY Session: USD weaker after FOMC leaves policy unchanged, GDP disappoints

Updated Jan 30, 2013 4:20:00 PM

The dollar was mostly softer against the majors after Q4 GDP unexpectedly contracted and as the FOMC maintained its rate of asset purchases at $85B per month while noting a pause in economic activity. US labor data was better than expected, however this was offset by downward revisions to the prior month. In New Zealand, rates were kept steady at 2.50% as expected. The euro continued its ascent with EUR/USD breaking above the 1.35 figure  [...] Continue Reading

Fundamental Update: How to digest confusing economic signals from the US

Updated Jan 30, 2013 11:00:00 AM

No one saw that coming. The 0.1% decline in Q4 2012 GDP in the US was much worse than the 1.1% expansion the market had expected, added to that it came hot on the heels of yesterday’s consumer confidence disappointment, which dropped to its lowest level in more than a year. The problem for traders is that the economic data in the last 24 hours has been confusing, contradictory and thus difficult to get a  [...] Continue Reading

NY Session: FOMC gives the dollar a boost, focus shifts to NFP

Updated Jan 3, 2013 4:30:00 PM

The USD is broadly higher after minutes from the December FOMC meeting indicated that most members saw an end to QE this year. “Several” members backed slowing or stopping purchases well before the end of 2013 while a “few” members said that asset purchases would likely be warranted until about the end of 2013. The greenback gained on the new guidance regarding QE, however the conditions for the end of asset purchases remain unclear, unlike  [...] Continue Reading

Asia Session/ London Open: Sentiment is mixed in Asia as investor focus remains on the US

Updated Jan 3, 2013 12:00:43 AM

An almost complete lack of headline local data and market closures in Japan and China kept some investors on the sidelines. This didn’t prevent a sell-off in the euro and pound mid-way through the session, with EURUSD triggering a slew of orders around 1.3150, eventually sending the pair to a low around 1.3120. The aussie and kiwi fared better against the dollar however, although they still lost ground as traders chose to consolidate their positions.  [...] Continue Reading
