Weekly Equities Outlook: BP, Barclays, Coinbase
Barclays full-year results
Barclays will report full-year results on Tuesday, February 10th, ahead of the UK market open and comes as the bank's share price trades up 58% over the past year amid solid results in 2025
The results come as interest rates were cut four times last year, which should have strengthened the UK mortgage business and investment banking divisions. Mortgage rates have fallen over the last year, and lenders have competed to offer a range of deals to borrowers.
Barclays is also a major investment bank, which may have benefited from increased activity in financial markets and deal-making.
In Q3, Barclays posted total income of £7.17 billion, ahead of estimates of £7.04 billion. However, the bank also said it's increasing the amount it's setting aside to cover costs related to the car financing scandal to £325 million, of which £235 million was recognised in Q3. As a result, pretax profit of £2.08 billion for Q3 was down 7% year over year and below consensus at £2.12 billion.
For this quarter, the bank is expected to post pre-tax profits of 1.33 billion and £7.07 billion for the full year.
How to trade BARC results?
Barclays has trended higher from the April low, rising to a record high of 506, before falling back below the 20 SMSA to the 50 SMA support at 465. Should buyers continue defending this support, a rise above the 20 SMA at 482 brings the record high of 506 back into focus. A break below the 50 SMA opens the door to 430, the November high.
BP full year results
BP will release its results on Tuesday, February 10th. These follow a trading update in early January, in which BP warned it expected to write down $4 to $5 billion related to its transition business. The company also warned of expected weak oil trading results for Q4.
Results reflect declining oil prices over the past few years, driven by long-term concerns about falling demand and oversupply, despite recent spikes amid heightened geopolitical tensions. Despite the oil price, BP shares are up almost 11% over the past year.
Attention will also be on the firm’s transition towards lower-carbon energy. BP has publicly committed to scaling its renewable energy portfolio as part of its energy transformation. The pace and scale of this rollout remains focus.
Expectations are for lower revenue, pre-tax profit, and earnings per share than in full-year 2024.
Revenue is expected at $184.78 billion, down 5% from FY 2024. EPS is forecast at $0.48, 8.5% lower compared to 2024.
How to trade BP. earnings?
BP has been trending higher since the April low, reaching a 20-month high of 490. Buyers, supported by momentum, will look to rise above 490 and on to 500. Immediate support is seen at 470, the 2025 high. A break below here exposes the 50 SMA at 440, and the rising trendline at 430.
Coinbase Q4 earnings
Coinbase will release Q4 results on Thursday, February 12th, and comes as the company's share price has been under pressure in recent sessions amid weakness across cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency, fell to as low as 60k this week, a level last seen in September 2024, and is down over 50% from its record high of 126,000 in October last year.
A combination of risk of sentiment ETF outflows and delays in regulatory moves has weighed on demand for Bitcoin.
Attention will be on whether trading volumes stabilise with the upcoming release expected to provide a clearer picture of Coinbase's ability to navigate the current crypto downturn.
Attention will be on commentary on cost management and operational adjustments. It is also expected to set the tone for Q1 performance, as traders gauge whether market sentiment is stabilising and whether conditions are sufficient to support a rebound in platform activity and revenue.
How to trade COIN earnings?
Coinbase has trended lower, trading below its falling trendline dating back to October 10, dropping to a low of 145, the April low. The RSI is deeply oversold, so some caution is warranted.
Sellers will look to extend the selloff towards 114, the 2024 low, ahead of 100, the round number.
Buyers will look to rise above 228, the 2025 low and the falling trendline resistance to negate the near-term selloff.
