Crypto Outlook: Lack of Demand Remains a Challenge for Crypto

By :   Julian Pineda CFA, CMT , Market Analyst

As the second half of October begins, a growing sense of caution has become increasingly evident across the cryptocurrency market. Demand continues to struggle to regain momentum, while confidence around the sector's largest assets remains trapped in a relatively persistent phase of neutrality. What stands out is that this dynamic has persisted even as competing markets such as the U.S. dollar and bonds have started to lose some of their appeal in recent sessions.

This suggests that the crypto market is not only reacting to external macroeconomic developments, but is also facing its own loss of momentum, reflected in lower investor participation. As long as this lack of activity remains dominant, neutrality could continue to be an important feature of market behavior in the sessions ahead.

Is Demand Activity Struggling to Recover?

The week was marked by an important shift across several markets that typically compete with cryptocurrencies for capital flows. In recent days, comments from members of the Federal Reserve helped moderate expectations of further rate hikes in the near term, leading to a decline in 10-year U.S. Treasury yields.

Yields have retreated toward the 5.0% area after trading close to 5.3%, while the DXY, the index that measures U.S. dollar strength against its major peers, has also lost momentum and moved back toward the 101-point area. In other words, two of crypto's main competing markets have become less attractive over the short term.

However, the most important aspect is that the crypto market has failed to take advantage of this change in conditions. Looking at Bitcoin as a reference, capital flows into spot ETFs continue to reflect relatively limited activity. Throughout the week, there were no particularly significant inflows and, as of October 14, the market was still recording cumulative net outflows of more than $260 million.

This suggests that demand remains subdued and that a meaningful recovery in capital flows has yet to emerge. Under normal circumstances, a decline in the attractiveness of markets such as bonds and the dollar could help support stronger activity across cryptocurrencies. However, recent behavior suggests that caution remains dominant and that the market continues to struggle to attract fresh capital.

With all of this in mind, the situation remains important because it shows that the crypto market continues to exhibit weak demand even in an environment where some competing markets have lost part of their strength. This reflects a loss of attractiveness that has become increasingly evident in recent sessions and suggests that cryptocurrencies remain relatively sidelined within short-term capital flows. If the U.S. dollar and bond markets regain strength, this dynamic could place even more pressure on crypto demand and support a phase of indecision or even more persistent weakness in the near term.

Bitcoin Versus Other Markets

It is also worth highlighting that Bitcoin has begun to display a closer relationship with the recent behavior of gold. The correlation coefficient between both markets remains in positive territory and continues to reflect a relatively consistent alignment over the last 25 trading sessions. Correlation coefficients can change over time.

This development is relevant because gold has also displayed a cautious trading environment in recent sessions. Despite changes observed in bond and equity markets, the precious metal has struggled to attract particularly strong demand and has remained trapped in a relatively directionless environment.

The growing similarity between both assets could suggest that Bitcoin is losing some of its attractiveness both as a risk asset and as an alternative investment within portfolios. In other words, investors appear to be focusing their attention on other segments of the financial markets while both gold and cryptocurrencies continue to develop within a relatively neutral environment.

It is also important to observe recent volatility trends. Over the last week, much of the cryptocurrency market has recorded substantially smaller price movements than those observed over one-month, three-month, and twelve-month horizons. This decline in average volatility reflects lower market activity and suggests declining investor interest in the short term.

While other markets continue to attract greater attention from investors, major cryptocurrencies have maintained relatively limited price movements that struggle to stand out compared with other opportunities across financial markets.

Taking all of this into account, the current environment is characterized not only by lower activity across the crypto market but also by behavior increasingly similar to assets experiencing cautious trading conditions, such as gold. This could indicate that capital flows continue to favor markets that currently offer more attractive opportunities. As long as this situation remains in place, a phase of indecision and even moderate weakness could continue to play a significant role across the cryptocurrency market in the short term.

Confidence Struggles to Recover

Recent movements in the Fear & Greed Index continue to reflect a more cautious environment across the market. The indicator currently trades around 50 points, returning to a neutral zone that had not been seen for several weeks.

This is important because it reflects a gradual slowdown in the enthusiasm observed earlier. The recovery in confidence seen during previous weeks has lost momentum, allowing a more neutral market tone to gain relevance across the cryptocurrency sector.

The evolution of this indicator remains important because it serves as a barometer of risk appetite within the crypto market. If confidence continues to struggle to recover, it could further limit the market's ability to sustain demand and reinforce the view that part of investor interest is shifting toward alternative opportunities. Under this scenario, the loss of momentum in sentiment could continue to support a phase of indecision and relative weakness that is becoming increasingly relevant across the cryptocurrency market.
