British Pound Forecast: GBP/USD Outside-Week Reversal Faces Major Test

By :   Michael Boutros , Sr. Technical Strategist

British Pound Technical Forecast: GBP/USD Weekly Trade Levels

  • GBP/USD GBP/USD has rebounded more than 2% from the October low after a sharp decline from the August highs.
  • Sterling is testing the 52-week moving average after breaking the October range with weekly momentum attempting to reclaim neutral territory.
  • A sustained break above initial resistance would strengthen the case for a more meaningful recovery into the November trade.
  • Failure to sustain the rebound would leave the pair vulnerable to renewed selling pressure, with the yearly range lows remaining critical to the broader outlook.
  • U.K. CPI and preliminary PMIs headline this week's event risk, with inflation data likely to prove particularly important for near-term BoE expectations.
  • Resistance 1.3400/06, 1.3470/74 (key), 1.3558- Support 1.3265, 1.3194 (key), 1.3092

Sterling has regained its footing following the sharp September decline, with the latest rebound bringing GBP/USD to an important technical inflection point. While the near-term outlook has improved, buyers still face considerable hurdles before a more durable low can be confirmed. The immediate focus is on whether bullish momentum can carry price through overhead resistance or whether the advance begins to falter, leaving the September correction vulnerable to another leg lower. With key U.K. economic releases still ahead, the weekly close could provide important guidance on the next directional move. Battle lines drawn on the GBP/USD weekly technical chart.

British Pound Price Chart – GBP/USD Weekly

Chart Prepared by Michael Boutros, Sr. Technical Strategist; GBP/USD on TradingView

Technical Outlook: In last month’s British Pound Weekly Forecast we noted that GBP/USD was testing Fibonacci support with an objective breakout of the September opening range, “tilting the near-term outlook to the downside for now. From a trading standpoint, rallies should be limited to 1.3474 IF price is heading lower on this stretch with a close below 1.3345 needed to fuel the next leg lower..” Sterling broke support the following week with the decline extending more than 3.9% off the August highs before exhausting into critical support last week at 1.3194- a level defined by the 38.2% retracement of the 2025 advance and the yearly low-close.

The focus is on this rebound from support with an outside-week reversal last week breaking the October opening range and extending more than 2% from the yearly low. The recovery is testing resistance today at the 52-week moving average and the 50% retracement to the August decline at 1.3400/06. Note that weekly RSI is now attempting to breach the 50-threshold and a weekly close above with a rally surpassing this pivot zone in price is needed to fuel the next leg of the advance.

The next major technical consideration is eyed at the objective yearly open and the 61.8% retracement at 1.3470/74- look for a larger reaction there IF reached. Subsequent resistance is eyed at the July high at 1.3558. Ultimately, a topside breach / weekly close above the 2025 / 2026 high week closes (HWC) at 1.3648/85 would be needed to validate a breakout of the yearly range and threaten resumption of the 2022 uptrend.

Monthly open support rests at 1.3265 with critical support steady at 1.3194. Note that the November trendline rests just above this level and a break / weekly close below would be needed to validate a breakout of the yearly opening range lows and could fuel a bout of accelerated Sterling losses. Subsequent support objectives rest with the November low close and the 2023 high week close (HWC) at 1.3092/96.

Bottom line: GBP/USD has rebounded sharply off critical support at the yearly range lows, and the focus is on this recovery. From a trading standpoint, losses would need to be limited to the monthly open at 1.3265 IF price is heading higher on this stretch with a close above 1.3474 needed to suggest a more significant low is in place and fuel the next major leg of the rally.

GBP/USD event risk remains heavily concentrated in Wednesday’s U.K. CPI release and Friday’s preliminary October PMIs. Today’s stronger-than-expected labor-market report reinforced expectations for a 25-basis-point Bank of England hike on November 5. Unemployment unexpectedly fell to 4.7%, while regular wage growth accelerated, lifting market pricing for a hike to roughly 94–95% from around 93% before the data. That repricing has strengthened sterling, but it also raises the risk of a “buy the rumor, sell the fact” reaction if inflation fails to confirm the hawkish shift. With Fed officials in blackout ahead of next week’s decision, incoming U.S. data—including Friday’s PMIs and Michigan sentiment—will remain the key driver of the dollar leg into the weekly close. Stay nimble into the releases and watch the weekly close for guidance. I’ll publish an updated  British Pound Short-term Outlook once we get further clarity on the near-term GBP/USD technical trade levels.
