Canadian Dollar Short-term Outlook: USD/CAD Coils Below Resistance—Breakout Looms

By :   Michael Boutros , Sr. Technical Strategist

Canadian Dollar Technical Outlook: USD/CAD Short-term Trade Levels

  • USD/CAD held a tight range below major resistance after a strong multi-week advance.
  • Daily momentum remains elevated, keeping the broader outlook constructive for now.
  • The July / weekly opening ranges are taking shape just below resistance- breakout to offer direction.
  • A topside break would signal trend resumption while a break below range support would threaten a larger correction within May uptrend.
  • FOMC minutes and Canadian employment data could provide the next directional catalyst.
  • Resistance 1.4235/39 (key), 1.4292, 1.4335- Support 1.4197, 1.4145, 1.4109 (key)

USD/CAD is consolidating just below major resistance after a powerful multi-week rally carried the pair into fresh yearly highs. The tight range highlights a market coiling for its next directional move, with the July opening range now taking shape beneath a key technical barrier. With momentum still elevated, a breakout here could either fuel the next leg of the broader uptrend or trigger the first meaningful reversal signal since the May advance began. Battle lines drawn on the USD/CAD short-term technical charts.

Canadian Dollar Price Chart – USD/CAD Daily

Chart Prepared by Michael Boutros, Sr. Technical Strategist; USD/CAD on TradingView

Technical Outlook: In last month’s Canadian Dollar Short-term Outlook, we noted that USD/CAD was approaching resistance with the momentum still favoring the bulls and that, “From a trading standpoint, losses would need to be limited to 1.3941 / the lower parallel IF price is heading higher on this stretch with a close above 1.4035 needed to fuel the next leg higher.” USD/CAD broke higher later that day with the rally extending more than 3.3% off the June low before exhausting into confluent uptrend resistance at the 2025 March swing lows at 1.4235/39.

Price has held a well-defined range just below this resistance zone for the past two weeks with the monthly opening-range taking shape just below. Daily RSI has remained in overbought condition for over a month now after reaching the highest levels in years– look for the range breakout to offer guidance here in the days ahead with the outlook still constructive while within the May channel.

Canadian Dollar Price Chart – USD/CAD 240min

Chart Prepared by Michael Boutros, Sr. Technical Strategist; USD/CAD on TradingView

Notes: A closer look at Canadian Dollar price action shows USD/CAD continuing to trade within the confines of the ascending pitchfork extending May lows. A multi-week range has taken shape just below resistance and a resolution of this range should clear the way for the next move. Monthly open support rests at 1.4197 and is backed by the range lows at 1.4145. Key support and near-term bullish invalidation rests with the November high-day close (HDC) at 1.4109. Note that this level converges on the lower parallel mid-week and losses below this slope would be needed to suggest a more significant high is in place and a larger reversal is underway. Subsequent support rests with the 2022 swing high and the 38.2% retracement of the May advance at 1.3978/82.

A topside breach / close above 1.4235 would threaten uptrend resumption toward subsequent resistance objectives at the 61.8% retracement of the 2025 decline at 1.4292 and the 1.618% extension of the January advance at 1.4335. This level converges on the upper parallel mid-week- look for a larger reaction there IF reached. The next resistance zone is eyed at the 2025 yearly open near 1.4383.

Bottom line: A five-week rally has stalled into the May uptrend with the USD/CAD trading in a well-defined range just below resistance into the start of the month. From a trading standpoint, losses would need to be limited to 1.4109 IF price is heading higher on this stretch with a close above 1.4239 needed to fuel the next leg higher.

This week's economic calendar is highlighted by Wednesday's release of the FOMC minutes and Friday's Canadian employment report. With Q3 still in its early stages and the monthly opening range continuing to develop, stay nimble early in the month and look to the weekly close for directional guidance.
