Swiss Franc Short-term Outlook: USD/CHF Reverses Hard From Resistance- Breakdown Risk Builds

By :   Michael Boutros , Sr. Technical Strategist

Swiss Franc Technical Forecast: USD/CHF Short-term Trade Levels

  • USD/CHF has reversed sharply from a major resistance zone- reversal extending to fresh weekly low.
  • Price has broken near-term trend support, signaling a shift in momentum.
  • A sustained move lower would confirm a broader downside continuation while a hold could stabilize the decline and trigger a short-term rebound.
  • Event risk on tap into the monthly cross: US ISM data & Non-Farm Payrolls next week
  • Resistance 7850, 7873, 7926/35 (key)- Support 7808/17, 7772/75 (key), 7730

USD/CHF is turning sharply lower after failing to sustain gains near a key resistance zone, with price now testing initial support levels. The reversal marks a shift in near-term momentum following the recent rally, bringing the focus to whether this move extends into resumption of the broader downtrend. The reaction at support will be key in determining whether downside pressure accelerates or the pair stabilizes in the near term. Battles lines drawn on the USD/CHF short-term technical charts heading into May trade.

Swiss Franc Price Chart – USD/CHF Daily

Chart Prepared by Michael Boutros, Sr. Technical Strategist; USD/CHF on TradingView

Technical Outlook: In last month’s Swiss Franc Short-term Outlook we highlighted the risk for some pullback after USD/CHF had responded to confluent resistance and noted that, “From a trading standpoint, losses should be limited to 7823 IF price is heading for a breakout on this stretch with a close above 7974 needed to fuel the next major leg of the advance.” USD/CHF registered 7834 days later before reversing sharply higher with an advance of nearly 2.7% faltering into the close of March at the January high near 8041.

USD/CHF plunged more than 3.3% off the yearly high with the April decline rebounding last week just ahead of the 61.8% retracement of the year-to-date range at 7772. The rally extended into confluent resistance on the heels yesterday’s Fed meeting at the objective yearly open and the 61.8% retracement of the broader November decline at 7926 (high registered at 7925). A strong reversal off this level today has extended more than 1.1% with the decline now testing support here at the April low-day close (LDC) and the 78.6% retracement of the recent rally at 7808/17. The focus is on a reaction of this mark with the threat still weighted to the downside while within this channel. Watch today’s close with respect to this zone.

Swiss Franc Price Chart – USD/CHF 240min

Chart Prepared by Michael Boutros, Sr. Technical Strategist; USD/CHF on TradingView

Notes: A closer look at Swisse price action shows USD/CHF continuing to trade within the confines off the April 7 high with upper parallel further highlighting key resistance at 7926. Today’s decline breaks the near-term uptrend extending off the monthly low and threatens further losses heading into the monthly cross. Weekly open resistance is eyed at 7850 and is backed closely by 7873/75- a region defined by the October & November lows, the December Close low, and the 38.2% retracement of the year-to-date range. Ultimately, a breach / daily close above the 200-day moving average at ~7935 would be needed to suggest a more significant low is in place and a larger trend reversal is underway.

A break / daily close below this support zone exposes the 61.8% retracement and the monthly low at 7772/75. Look for a larger reaction there IF reached- losses below this threshold would threaten resumption of the broader downtrend and could fuel another bout of accelerated losses for the Dollar. The next major technical considerations on the downside rests with the yearly low-week close (LWC) at 7730 and the 78.6% retracement near 7698.

Bottom line: USD/CHF turned from confluent resistance at the yearly open this week with price now poised to mark the largest single-day decline since February 9th. From a trading standpoint, rallies should be limited to 7875 IF price is heading lower on this stretch with a close below 7808 needed to fuel the next leg of the decline towards the April lows.

Keep in mind we are heading into the close of the month with an ongoing barrage of war headlines and key US labor data on tap next week (ADP Wednesday and Non-Farm Payroll Friday). Stay nimble into the May opening-range and watch the weekly closes for guidance here.
