Gold Outlook: Record Highs Test Momentum Into Year-End
Gold broke to fresh record highs on Monday despite quiet market conditions, reinforcing the strength of the underlying trend. With seasonality supportive but year-end liquidity thinning rapidly, the focus now turns to whether bulls can extend gains into the final trading days of the year — or whether profit-taking begins to cap upside.

Gold Breaks Above October High as Seasonality Supports Bulls
Breakout Lacks Catalyst but Momentum Remains Intact
Spot gold was the first to break above October’s record high on Monday, with gold futures following a few hours later. There was no obvious catalyst behind the move, though I’m not sure one was really required. Gold has been trending higher since the October low, seasonality is supportive, and with trading volumes thinning into Christmas and the year-end, there is little to stand in the way of the prevailing uptrend unless a fresh catalyst or end-of-year profit-taking emerges.

December Seasonality Favors Gains, Though Win Rates Are Mixed
Seasonality of the past 50 years has shown gold to deliver average and median returns of 1.1%. This shows stability in the pattern overall, though its win rate has only been 52%. Still, focussing on the winning months only shows an average positive return of 4.78%, compared with -2.9% average return of the 48% of losing months.
Year-End Liquidity Raises Risk of Consolidation or Profit-Taking
With just one week of actual trading left in the year, bulls may want to tread with caution given gold has already risen 4.3% in December at the time of writing.

Still, there is no imminent threat of a top based on price action alone. The RSI (14) has only just edged into overbought territory — exactly where it would be expected to sit during a healthy uptrend. Seasonality also remains supportive: average daily returns in December show a clear tendency for gold to rise in the sessions surrounding Christmas, accompanied by relatively high win rates. That opens the door to a further push higher before end-of-year profit-taking sets in. Beyond that, the broader outlook remains constructive, with any pullbacks likely to be met by strong dip-buying interest.
