Crude Oil Weekly Outlook: Will WTI Rebound from Key $88 Support Again?

WTI crude oil is retesting the critical $88 support level, the lower boundary of a multi-month consolidation range, as markets weigh soft summer demand, rising inventories, OPEC production increases, and ongoing geopolitical risks in the Middle East. Rebound or breakdown?

Despite mounting pressure from weakening demand indicators and higher supply expectations, crude oil continues to hold above key support levels while the Middle East supply shock enters its 100th day. The longer this consolidation persists, the greater the likelihood of a significant breakout in either direction.

As prices close near this pivotal support zone, three key scenarios remain in focus for traders and investors. I mentioned this pattern in my previous crude oil video and Daily MENA Call  webinar.

Three Key Scenarios for WTI Crude Oil

1. Rebound Within the Consolidation Range

A rebound from the $88 support zone could keep prices trading within the established consolidation range, targeting resistance between $95 and $100 per barrel.

This scenario would reflect continued uncertainty regarding global supply disruptions, geopolitical risks, and the outlook for demand growth.

2. Bullish Breakout Above the Consolidation

A breakout above the upper boundary of the consolidation range could open the door toward the $130–$150 region.

Such a move would likely require a significant escalation in Middle East tensions, prolonged supply disruptions, or renewed concerns over crude oil availability through key shipping routes.

3. Bearish Breakdown Below Support

A decisive break below the $88 support zone and the broader $86 structural support area could trigger a deeper correction toward $74 and potentially $67 per barrel.

This outcome would likely reflect easing geopolitical tensions, improved supply flows, stronger production growth, and reduced concerns over energy security.

Factors to Watch for Crude Oil Volatility

Several fundamental drivers will remain critical for oil markets in the weeks ahead:

Summer Demand and Inventory Trends

Demand continues to face pressure from elevated energy costs and signs of slowing import demand from China. At the same time, US crude oil inventories remain elevated, highlighting concerns over near-term consumption growth.

OPEC+ Production Policy

OPEC+ has agreed to increase production by approximately 188,000 barrels per day for June. While additional supply may help ease market tightness, geopolitical disruptions continue to limit the full impact of higher production targets.

US-Iran Negotiations and the Strait of Hormuz

Markets continue to monitor the possibility of an agreement between the United States and Iran that could help secure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. However, negotiations remain at a stalemate, leaving supply risks elevated.

Alternative Export Routes

Efforts to expand alternative export infrastructure that could bypass the Strait of Hormuz remain underway. These projects could eventually improve supply resilience and reduce geopolitical risk premiums in crude oil markets.

In the UAE, the continued development of export infrastructure through Fujairah remains an important long-term strategic project, with further capacity expansion expected over the coming years.

Source: Trading view

Crude oil price action remains within the bounds of a multi-month consolidation range and under the $95 level, the 2023 high, increasing the risk of a sharp decline comparable to the steep advance that preceded the consolidation. This development provides some relief to bond markets; however, bullish risks remain on the table as crude oil continues to hold above the key $86 support level, and strikes in the Middle East continue, preventing full confirmation of the bearish reversal.

Bullish Scenario for Crude Oil

A sustained breakout above $95, $102, and $112 could expose another leg higher this year toward $127, $135, and $157. These levels align with the Fibonacci extension ratios of 61.8%, 78.6%, and 100% of the 2020–2022–2026 cycle.

Such a scenario would likely increase pressure on global currencies against the U.S. dollar, precious metals, and potentially divert risk sentiment away from AI-related assets, especially after the latest steep sell off as a result of stronger nfps and rate hike expectations

The bullish outlook would align with both RSI and price-action breakouts above the trendline connecting the lower highs formed since March, potentially setting the stage for one final rally.

Bearish Scenario for Crude Oil

A sustained hold below the 2023 highs near the $88–$91 resistance zone would keep the de-escalation narrative in focus. This scenario would be confirmed by closes below $85, $82, and $79, opening the door for a retest of the previous Middle East conflict high near $76-$74. From there, crude oil could either stage another rebound or extend its decline toward $67.

The bearish scenario would likely align with continued RSI weakness, characterized by lower highs since March 2026 and sustained trading below the neutral 50 level. This would confirm a potential triangle pattern breakdown/reversal, raising the risk of a decline comparable in magnitude to the sharp advance that preceded the pattern's formation, aligning with the $67 downside target.

Such a scenario would likely ease inflationary pressures across global markets, allowing risk assets to regain momentum, particularly if central banks shift toward a less hawkish policy stance.
