What is the ESG index?

Our ESG index gives you exposure to companies that make a positive impact in following US Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) scores.

It excludes companies based on social and environmental factors, including those involved in fossil fuels, nuclear power, tobacco, alcohol, gambling, weapons and more.

Quick facts on the ESG index

This index captures the Total Return Performance of the top ESG rated US-listed companies, with a weighting scheme based on each company’s ESG Scores. Index values are disseminated on an intraday and end-of-day basis. The index is managed by BITA GmbH and is revised quarterly on the third Friday of every March, June, September and December after market close.

How companies qualify for ESG index status

This index focuses on strong environment commitments, whether it be climate change policies, emission goals, carbon footprint or similar. Companies who score highly on these issues, as well as social factors like culture and employee wellbeing, may be featured.

For example, a company might be included if it were judged to have good corporate governance with a strong board of directors, who operate the business effectively while aligning wider ESG ambitions with the company’s own.

How to trade the ESG index

This index features over 100 companies over a wide range of industries. Much like trading wider indices like the FTSE 100, if you felt that US stocks were overpriced, you may want to go short or sell the ESG index.

On the other hand, if you felt that a bull run was on the horizon, you might choose to go long or buy the index.
