Shared economic factors

When precious metals spike, a trader’s instinct may lead them to examine commodity markets for answers. However, an analyst may instead look out for macroeconomic themes across various other markets, because metals don’t always move in isolation.

Understanding these shared drivers between metals and FX markets can help you navigate potential volatility with confidence.

That said, past performance is not indicative of future results.

Gold is priced in USD, and the two have traditionally tended to move in opposite directions. It's common to see the conditions driving USD weakness visible on other FX pairs, like EUR/USD or USD/CHF. In this view, a gold rally and a dollar sell-off may be the same story told in different markets.

Rising real yields tend to weigh on gold and strengthen the dollar simultaneously. Analysts observe that both markets typically respond to the same signal, like a hawkish Fed.

Gold and silver are usually seen as safe-haven assets by traders. In FX markets, analysts note a parallel dynamic in flows towards to JPY and CHF during periods of stress.

While they may appear correlated at this time, it is important to note that these correlations may change in the future, as past performance is not indicative of future results.
