SPI 200 futures rose to a seven-week high overnight, putting 9,000 within reach. Yet declining futures volumes and open interest raise questions about the conviction behind the rally, while Thursday's retail selloff revealed growing cracks beneath the broader market's strength.

ASX 200 Rally Masks Growing Pressure on Australian Consumers

Australia's major retailers are showing signs of weakening discretionary demand, just as accelerating inflation strengthens the case for another RBA interest rate hike. Trading updates from JB Hi-Fi, Super Retail Group and Wesfarmers suggest household budgets are increasingly stretched, raising questions about how much further consumers can absorb higher living and borrowing costs.

ASX 200 Sentiment: Banks Lead, but Consumer Weakness Raises Concerns
  • The ASX 200 gained 0.5% on Thursday, with 118 stocks advancing against 74 decliners. Financials (+1.9%) and Real Estate (+1.8%) led the gains, suggesting buyers remain active despite growing concerns about interest rates.
  • Consumer Discretionary (-2.0%) and Staples (-1.8%) were the weakest sectors, as disappointing retail trading updates highlighted pressure on household spending. This contrasts with the strength in banks and raises questions about the sustainability of the broader rally.
  • Sentiment remains cautiously bullish heading into Friday, although the RBA's anticipated rate hike next Tuesday presents a risk. With Friday's average trading range just 69 points over the past three months, traders may find it difficult to sustain a breakout towards 9,000 without a fresh catalyst.

Retailers Reveal Growing Pressure on Household Spending

Thursday's corporate updates revealed a mixed but increasingly cautious Australian consumer.

  • JB Hi-Fi (JBH): Australian comparable sales fell 1.4% in Q1 FY27, while The Good Guys declined 0.4% and e&s dropped 4.5%. Management also reported slowing sales in October, with consumers increasingly focused on promotions and value.
  • Super Retail Group (SUL): Group like-for-like sales grew just 0.2%. BCF declined 1.1%, partly reflecting higher fuel prices, while Macpac dropped 11.7%, also affected by milder weather and promotional timing. Supercheap Auto proved more resilient, growing 2.5%.
  • Wesfarmers (WES): Bunnings reported moderating sales growth, particularly across commercial and seasonal categories. Kmart and Officeworks performed more steadily, suggesting consumers remain willing to spend selectively.

ASX retailer charts show JB Hi-Fi and Wesfarmers testing trend support, while Super Retail breaks lower amid rising volume and volatility.

Retail Stocks Slide as Selling Pressure Intensifies

The bearish price action reinforces the weakening outlook for retailers. JB Hi-Fi and Wesfarmers are trading below their 200-day moving averages, while Super Retail Group has slipped beneath its rising trendline. All three suffered sharp declines on Thursday, accompanied by rising trading volumes and expanding daily ranges. This combination points to increasingly aggressive selling pressure, leaving the stocks vulnerable to further downside unless buyers can quickly regain control. What separates them for now is that JBH and WES are holding above trend support while SUL broken beneath its own -= though bulls put up fight into the close on Thursday to retest its broken trendline.

ASX charts show JB Hi-Fi and Wesfarmers below 200-day averages, while Super Retail breaks trend support amid heavy trading volumes.

ASX 200 Futures Approach 9,000 as Bullish Conviction Wanes

SPI 200 futures rose to a 7-week high overnight and are potentially within a day or two’s trading range of 9,000. While price action has been messy of late, bullish momentum has picked up since breaking back above the 200-day SMA, with the potential to break above Wednesday’s high and head towards 9,000.

However, daily trading volumes and open interest have declined, suggesting the rally lacks bullish conviction. And with resistance looming at 9,000 (round number) and two high-volume nodes around 9,050, I am now on guard for a potential swing high.

SPI 200 futures daily and ASX 200 four-hour charts showing resistance at 9,000–9,050, declining volume and open interest, and potential pullback levels.

ASX 200 Options Positioning Points to Resistance Near 8,950

The 4-hour chart shows the ASX holding above its 10 and 20-bar EMAs for now, keeping the near-term bullish bias intact.

Options positioning on the cash ASX 200 also suggests the upside could become more difficult. The 8,900 level is a potential pivot, with heavier call positioning around 8,925–8,950 that could slow the advance. A sustained break above this zone would bring 9,000 into focus, while 8,800 stands out as a more significant support area should the rally lose momentum.
