Why Crude Oil Slid While Middle East Tensions Kept Building

The crude oil pullback from monthly highs is running ahead of the headlines, as WTI and Brent ease while Middle East tensions stay unresolved.

Fundamentally, Saudi Arabia increased Gulf crude loadings and began restoring its East–West pipeline and Yanbu export operations. Investors are also anticipating possible diplomatic progress between the U.S. and Iran, easing immediate supply concerns.

Technically, WTI and Brent pulled back from key confluence zones.

Razan Hilal, StoneX Media Market Analyst, breaks down the daily charts for WTI and Brent crude alongside the long-term picture in the energy sector ETF. Momentum on both crude benchmarks has rolled over from overbought territory last seen earlier in 2026, while the energy sector ETF has slipped back below an 18-year resistance level that capped higher highs from 2008 onward.

The same map carries an escalation route, with U.S. midterm elections shaping the near-term narrative across energy markets.
