BITCOIN, ETHER KEY TAKEAWAYS:
- Binance is working to contain a security breach it estimates affected about $6.3 billion in crypto assets, though the issue appears isolated for now.
- The near-term path of least resistance for Bitcoin remains to the downside for a potential test of support in the $75K zone
- ETH/USD has broken back below the $2,350 level to approach support near $2,150, forming a clear bearish channel
It never rains, but it pours in the crypto market.
Binance is working to contain a security breach it estimates affected about $6.3 billion in crypto assets. The exchange says an attacker may have used a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop to access a service container and authorize withdrawals. Binance says it has found no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked, has frozen roughly $3 billion with industry partners, and will cover all losses with its SAFU fund and company resources. Withdrawals were temporarily suspended while security checks continued; deposits remained open.
Blockchain analytics firm Elliptic has attributed the theft to North Korea, and notes that stablecoin issuers froze a large portion of the funds, while the attacker moved some of the remaining assets into ether and other cryptocurrencies. The attribution and total remain subject to updates as investigations continue.
The immediate market reaction was a broad risk-off move. Bitcoin fell to around $76,400, its lowest level since September 18, while ether briefly touched $2,170. Crypto futures liquidations surged to about $1.57 billion, amplifying the initial decline as leveraged positions were forced to close.
For bitcoin, the main pressure is indirect: the breach raises concerns about exchange security, custody and the reliability of crypto market infrastructure. Forced selling and reduced risk appetite can weigh on BTC even though the reported stolen assets were not primarily bitcoin. The speed of any recovery will depend partly on whether Binance restores withdrawals smoothly and demonstrates that customer balances remain fully backed.
Ether faces an additional, more direct channel. Elliptic says the attacker has been converting some stolen funds into ETH, potentially adding selling pressure or disrupting liquidity as those holdings move across markets. That flow could keep ETH more volatile than BTC while the funds are traced and frozen where possible. It does not, by itself, indicate a problem with Ethereum’s network.
For traders, the immediate test is one of confidence, rather than imminent fears of contagion. Unlike the FTX fraud that served as the proverbial canary in the coalmine (or perhaps the collapse of the mine itself) for the last crypto bull market, the Binance hack appears to be isolated issue… for now.

As the chart above shows, Bitcoin has now dropped conclusively back below previous-resistance-turned-support in the $81K area. As long as price remains below that key line in the sand, the near-term path of least resistance remains to the downside for a potential test of support in the $75K zone, followed by $72K (the 50% Fibonacci retracement of the July-October rally) and $69K (the 61.8% retracement.
Ether Technical Analysis – ETH/USD Daily Chart

For its part, Ether’s daily chart looks similar, if not incrementally worse. ETH/USD has broken back below the $2,350 level to approach support near $2,150, forming a clear bearish channel at the same time. As long as that channel remains intact, the probabilities point to ongoing weakness in Ether, with a break below $2,150 support exposing the psychologically-significant $2000 level next.
